A foundation of faith
By Abbey Santoro

David, Sydney, Shelby and Tonya Moreland (left to right) take time to join together in prayer before eating dinner. David is the pastor of Foundation Bible Church in Williamsburg where the whole family is actively involved.

The first to rise in the morning and the last to go to sleep at night, a mother's work is never done. But for Tonya Moreland, faith brings purpose to each new day.

"Faith is the whole purpose of life," Tonya says. "I strive to use each day for God's glory, and my desire is to bring glory to him in whatever he has me doing."

Faith is a constant in the Moreland family. Tonya is devoted to serving her family. Alongside her husband, David, they have raised their daughters, Shelby, 18, and Sydney, 16, in Corbin.

Tonya and David were students at the University of Kentucky in Lexington at the same time, but it was not until after graduating that their paths crossed. They met through mutual friends and were married a year and a half later, which David says was "prophetic."

The Morelands' bonds have been strengthened by their faith. The family is deeply involved in Foundation Bible Church, which David has pastored for four years. But their faith extends beyond the church. "Our mom's love for God drives absolutely everything that she does," Shelby says.

In addition to raising Shelby and Sydney, Tonya also home-schooled both girls. Working as a teacher in the public school system for more than a decade, Tonya valued the opportunity to educate her own children. "Even through their schooling, my job was to instill in my girls that God's word would always be our priority and we will obey his word," she says.

Tonya's mother always told her she could do anything she set her mind to, and she often can be found outside doing yard work or working on her latest home-improvement project. "Mom took that literally and she's doing it," Sydney says. "That's one thing she's really passed on to us."

With much of her day devoted to serving others, it is rare Tonya finds a moment alone. "I don't ever think about myself," she says. "It is my last thought every day because I'm thinking about my family and what I need to do for them, or other things that may need to be done outside of our family and things that we need to do to help somebody else."

However, a newfound passion for writing has resulted in authoring a children's book series inspired by her daughters, allowing her to spread the gospel through another outlet. The "Seriously Sweet Series" published by Heart to Heart Publishing in Bowling Green, addresses life's generational questions through scripture.

"I spent much of the first part of my life only thinking about me," Tonya says. "God finally brought me to repentance and I truly submitted my life to him, that's why I strive to use each day for his glory."

David reads several verses from the Bible to his family while they share a meal. The Morelands spend time reading scripture together every day.

“Mom is always doing something,” Shelby says. “Even when she’s relaxing, she’s not really relaxing.” “She’s always on the move.”

Shelby, Sydney and Tonya take a hike at Cumberland Falls State Park. Home-schooling allows for flexibility throughout the school day.

Tonya is an active member of her family's church community. She helps lead the mid-week student ministry night, which frequently includes games and volleyball matches to encourage students to build relationships with others in attendance.

Tonya keeps score of a volleyball match between students at The Hoop House, a gymnasium next to her church. Young adult students gather on Wednesday nights for games and fellowship as part of Foundation Bible Church's ministry.

Sydney, Shelby and Tonya share a laugh as they crowd around the kitchen sink, working together to strain spaghetti before dinner.

"Of course, our family just being family holds us together, but all of us being a family in Christ holds us even closer together," Sydney says.

Tonya spends a rare moment in solitude, sitting on her patio writing in her journal. Tonya has authored three children's books and is currently working on a biography.
