Amy Smotherman Burgess is a 1998 graduate of Western Kentucky University's photojournalism program. She is returning for her 21st year of Mountain Workshop as a volunteer with the IT team. She spent her first few years interning with the Troy Daily News in Ohio, and as a photojournalist at the South Bend Tribune in Indiana.
After spending 17 years at the Knoxville News Sentinel, and 20 in the newspaper industry, Smotherman Burgess moved into the nonprofit world in 2017, taking a position telling the stories of Zoo Knoxville.
Her work has been recognized by the National Press Photographers Association, the Associated Press, Society of Professional Journalists, Tennessee Press Association and Best of Scripps awards.
