Old mountain music

story by Josephine Holtzman

Thomas feels like a bit of an outsider because his parents didn’t grow up here. But he connects to the music of Appalachia, where he was born and raised, and enjoys playing and teaching it. His passion for music also takes form in his handmade solid body guitars, which he crafts using reclaimed 200-year-old lumber. He says, “It’s really intriguing to think about having something that old, and then making musical vibrations through something that lives on.”
